Tech Research-Fibe Robo

Fibe Robo is a new pressure shape-changing fiber. Basically, we are able to control the shape and tension of the fabric by pressure. Base on that we made many concept developments and form ideations.

Concepts Development

Final concept

Snowshoe has 4 sections, front spoiler, elastic frame, foot stand, and tail. First, the front spoiler, based on research, it has a specific curve shape navigate users foot when walking in the powder snow, the shape could minimize the friction of each step. And for the elastic frame we use Fibe Robo to change the size of touching area between the snowshoes and ground. Compressed snow and powder snow will apply different pressure on the fabric, so the fabric will deform depends on the ground feedback. If user is walking on the powder snow, our product will maximize the size of touching area, which means minimize pressure of user on the snow to make sure our users are going to float on the snow. As we mentioned before, crater lake has 30 feet powder snow in wimter. When the user walks on a dense snow, we can also shrink down the size to increase flexibility.

Problem statement

Existing snowshoe are relatively difficult to adapt to in an environment with variable climatic or snow conditions. In addition, the physical exertion of walking on a snowshoe is very high and stems from a non-ergonomic walking design.

Final concept

A structure that could be manipulated to adapt to all extreme conditions.

We created mock-ups and went into the field to experiment. Ultimately validated our CONCEPT.
